Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

This foundation was–as can be concluded by the name–established by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Melinda Gates, his wife. This foundation supports the development of health programs in over 100 countries worldwide and has spent almost 2 billion dollars on global health projects. It promotes treatment for HIV, AIDS, malaria, and more and aims to aid the hoisting of families all around the world out of extreme poverty, hopefully by 2025.

Open Society Foundation

This project was founded by philanthropist George Soros in 1984 and was designed to help countries around the world make the transition from socialism to democracy. It aims to do this by advancing justice, education, public help, and good governance across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.

William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

This esteemed foundation funds global development by investing in programs of education, policy analysis, access to better markets, and more. It also focuses on environmental projects, taking initiatives to shift toward energy efficiency and renewable energy options. “In 2010, the foundation awarded some 526 grants and, through its global development partnerships, gave more than $53.3 million to academic institutions, private organizations and nonprofit groups including Harvard University, Oxfam, Save the Children and the Bread for the World Institute. About 16 percent of total global development giving, or $16.22 million, was spent on environment-focused projects.”

Children’s Investment Fund Foundation

This foundation was established in 2002 and is based in the United Kingdom. Its focus is working toward hunger alleviation, educational reform, and promoting child survival in developing countries. It takes on about 15-20 projects on an annual basis, aiming to have a massive impact on a couple of very focused areas.

United Nations Foundation

This foundation is fueled by a mission statement which “encourages wealthy countries, individuals and groups to contribute to and support the development and peacekeeping efforts of the United Nations. The foundation gives its entire revenue to global development with a focus on child health, climate change, peace and security, and poverty eradication.” It also has numerous future endeavors in mind, including a focus on women’s health, women’s education, and the elimination of preventable diseases worldwide.
